JALSA organizer Annie Fox on NPR

October 17th, 2011 Sheila Decter No comments
NPR reporting on the Sukkah at Occupy  Boston
Annie Fox is an organizer with the Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action.  For her, both the occupy movement and the holiday of Sukkot are reminders of our fragility.  “We remind ourselves of the people who are homeless, of the people who are struggling, of the people who are facing unemployment.  We remind ourselves of the struggle of the past, and the struggle of the present.”
Well done, Annieshabbat at Occupy Boston

JALSA and several other Jewish groups from across the city had constructed a Sukkah at Occupy Boston.  One theme of the holiday– as we live in these booths open to the wind and rain — specifically reminds us of the fragility of our material possessions.

Attorney General refuses to certify new ballot issue attacking affordable housing statute

September 7th, 2011 Sheila Decter No comments

Notwithstanding the outstanding vote to protect the affordable housing statute last fall (40 B), the proponents of that ballot initiative tried once again to attack the law with a new ballot initiative.  We are delighted to report that the Office of the Attorney General has agreed that the new initiative is substantially the same as the one turned down by the voters this past year, and by law cannot be repeated on the ballot in less than three years.

Researchers Needed – Food and Health

July 28th, 2011 JALSA No comments

Need Researchers! Can You Help?

As JALSA approaches employers, health insurance companies and government leaders about access to sustainable food, we are looking to demonstrate that providing incentives for healthy food can lower healthcare costs.
We need research! Can you help?
We are looking for studies demonstrating that incentivizing healthy food promotes healthier habits, or studies demonstrating that incentives improve health itself.  Do you know previous studies, useful  databases, or can you volunteer to do some looking?  Let us know!   Contact

JALSA Outreach Conversations

July 7th, 2011 Sheila Decter No comments

As JALSA celebrates its 10th anniversary, we are launching an Outreach Campaign of conversations which will help to guide our organization’s future.

As part of this process, we are asking people to reflect on what JALSA is doing now, what their hopes are for Jewish social justice in our community, and how we can change and grow to ensure there will continue to be a vibrant progressive Jewish voice in the future.  We are asking these questions of our own members, allies in the community, and others who care about our mission.  The main goal of these conversations is to get community input and reflection as we envision our future.

….

If you’ve participated in one of these conversations, here is aLINK TO THE RESPONSE FORM

If you are interested in taking part in one of these conversations, please email: annie@jalsa.org

JALSA is a special interest group. Our special interest is promoting the general welfare; safeguarding access to equal opportunity; and eliminating the legal, societal and economic barriers that stand between too many and the promise of the American dream.

We are a membership-based non-profit organization based in Boston. We are dedicated to being a strong, progressive, inter-generational voice, inspired by Jewish teachings and values, for social and economic justice, civil rights, and civil liberties for all peoples.

Recent efforts include:

  • Strengthening the state’s commitment to quality public education by working with legislators and educators to ensure adequate funds, reduce dropout rates and close achievement gaps;
  • Working on cutting edge issues, like green jobs, to ensure that low-income and minority communities have access to job training and green employment opportunities.
  • Addressing health as a civil right, supporting the improvement of and access to health care for people of all incomes;
  • Continuing legislative and judicial activities to prevent discrimination against members of gay, lesbian, and transgender communities; and
  • Providing advice to tenants and homeowners facing foreclosure, and working on statewide legislation to remedy the effects of the mortgage market collapse;

Major victories and Accomplishments:

  • Coordinating an ongoing effort to focus on civil rights through counsel with the state’s senior level civil rights officer, a position created in response to our coalition’s advocacy;
  • Bringing together scientists, academics, and advocates in support of the state’s stem cell law;
  • Founding Community Servings, the hot meals program for people with AIDS and other life-threatening diseases, and their caregivers.
  • Successfully protecting the constitutional right of religious freedom by coordinating two amici briefs in two important cases on religious accommodation before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

The Honorable Sumner Z. Kaplan

Link to Page of Rembrance

It is with great sadness that JALSA shares the news that Sumner Z. Kaplan, one of JALSA’s founders and one of our greatest fans, passed away Tuesday at the age of 92.  As most of you know, Sumner had tremendous energy and actively participated in everything we did until just a few months ago when he became ill.  We hoped his health would return, but unfortunately, that was not to be.   We have lost a tremendous friend.

Sumner was the beloved husband of 66 years to Eleanor ( Ellie) Kaplan; devoted father of Ruth Kaplan and her husband Toby Kusmer, Marjorie Kaplan and her husband Michael Stanislawski;  dear grandfather of Sarah Rose Kusmer and Anna Kusmer, Ethan, Aaron and Emma Stanislawski .

We extend our deepest sympathies to Sumner’s wife, Ellie, and his daughters, Ruth and Marjorie, and to his entire extended family.  As a community we mourn the loss of our dear friend and fierce leader for justice.

Sheila Decter
